2001 Season

Dear Number 3
By: John Nassif (Maverick)

I sit here and wonder, how things would be….
If you were still with us, dear number 3…..

I think of the great times I had, watching you race….
Every move, every pass, brought a smile to my face….

You were the best they had, NASCAR’s top man….
I lived for racing, to be an Earnhardt fan….

Breathtaking and graceful, you raced hard and true….
How can there ever be racing, racing without you?…

On that Sunday, I watched with pride and joy…..
You’d finish 3rd, Mikey to win, followed by your boy….

That wouldn’t happen, it wasn’t God’s plan…..
He touched you on the shoulder, and took you by the hand…..

The silence of the media, arose all our fears…..
When the news came, our eyes swelled with tears…

“We’ve lost Dale Earnhardt”, the message was clear….
How we longed to have you, to hold you near…..

The final lap, the final turn….
In months to come, for you our hearts would yearn…….

Michael still won, Jr still finished number two…..
All your fans still wished, to be able to see you….

For months, the tears would fall from my face…..
For years, I’ll wish to again see you race

With family and friends, I mourn your passing…..
Your memory and presence, will be forever lasting….

I find myself looking, for your famous black Chevrolet…..
Each time I remind myself, of the fateful February day…..

You left us all too soon, we weren’t ready to let you go…..
We all love you dearly, this I feel you already know….

Sundays are not the same, nor will they ever be….
For you are not with us, dear number 3….
