Summary:
Earnhardt finishes 6th in Dover, moves to 3rd in
points_6/4
Dale Earnhardt had a strong car and led about 48 laps
in Sunday's MBNA 400 at Dover, but could only finish sixth after going a lap down.
Earnhardt, who's right front tire was low, made his final pit stop of the day before the
rest of the leaders did. When a caution came out with 18 laps to go, Earnhardt was still a
lap down from making his final pit stop under green. But the leaders, who hadn't pitted
yet, got to pit under caution. Dale gained one spot in the points, moving to third. He is
now 98 points behind Bobby Labonte for the championship.
DE's car was mostly just neutral most of the day. He and Kevin just worked
with air pressure to get the handling better. He got lucky when he cut the right front, he
was going to pit anyway. After he took the lead, he drove the car very easy---he
and Kevin had already planned for just 2 tires, so he was saving the lefts. The caution
for JG just came at the wrong time. I think he would have done better than 6th. I don't
think he could have held off Tony, but he could have had 2nd. Just bad timing.
