Chevrolet Racing
1979-80: Chevy Monte Carlo
& Olds 442
In 1979 and 1980, Dale Earnhardt raced Chevy Monte Carlos
mixed with Oldsmobile Cutlass 442's. The sleek and slippery Cutlass was used on the
Superspeedways, while the more boxy Monte Carlo was used on short tracks.
Earnhardt, who won the Winston Cup Rookie of the Year award in 1979, made sure the
80s got off to a roaring start for the Chevy Monte Carlo racing team. He took home
the Winston Cup Drivers Championship and helped bring Chevrolet the 1980
Manufacturers Cup, all of which was a precursor to his future success behind the
wheel of Chevrolet racers.
